Megatherium (Giant Ground Sloth)
Megatherium, from the Greek mega ("great") and therion
("beast") was a genus of elephant-sized ground sloths endemic to South
America. Often called the giant ground sloth, megatheriums were
believed to have lived from the Early Pliocene through the end of the
Pleistocene. The giant sloth's size was exceeded by only a few other
land mammals, including mammoths and Paraceratherium.
